Stay Healthy During the Holidays

As a pediatric provider and mother, I know the holidays are a wonderful time for family, fun, and festivities—but they can also be a time when routines are disrupted and kids (and adults!) are more prone to sickness or stress. Here are some simple tips to keep your family healthy and thriving:

1. Keep a Consistent Routine

Even with holiday events, try to stick to regular sleep schedules, meal times, and physical activity. Children thrive on consistency, and a steady routine helps support their immune system.

2. Prioritize Nutritious Foods

Holiday treats are fun, but don’t forget the power of fruits, vegetables, and balanced meals. Incorporating nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, colorful veggies, and protein can help your child stay energized and support immunity. And Remember! Small changes are still changes! It doesn’t have to be perfect, just realistic and simple.

3. Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to forget water amidst hot chocolate and holiday drinks. Encourage kids to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help their bodies function optimally.

4. Keep Moving

Even short bursts of physical activity—like family walks, dance parties, or playing outside—can boost mood, burn extra calories, and strengthen the immune system.

5. Practice Hand Hygiene

Holiday gatherings often mean more exposure to germs. Teach children to wash hands frequently, especially before eating, after playing outside, or after visiting friends and family.

6. Manage Stress and Make Time for Rest

The holidays can be exciting—but also stressful. Quiet time, mindfulness, and fun family traditions can help reduce stress for both children and adults.

7. Know When to Seek Support

If your child is showing signs of illness or struggling with digestion, sleep, or behavior during the holidays, don’t hesitate to reach out. Early intervention can help prevent small issues from becoming bigger ones.

Bottom line: A few simple habits—good sleep, balanced nutrition, movement, and mindful routines—can help your child enjoy the holidays while staying healthy.
